Where did the term Health Nut come from?

I remember 45 years ago when I first running around the block. That was first time that I got called health nut by somone my own age. I didn't think that I cared really, but the more that I think about it I guess that I did.

I always felt one down for doiing the workouts that I did. My peer group thought this was just absurd; or maybe they thought I should only do it on the track at the high school we both went to. So maybe its just that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and thus a "nut"?

I don't know. I only know that we have this all with us still today. You generally cannot do your five mile around the block without having your neighbors say something derrogatory. Possibly this doesn't bother you, but my guess is that it does.

So why not just keep everything under wraps by joining  a club? I guess that's OK, but why you should you have to just to keep the next door neighbor thinking you are a mature adult? Besides, we don't have this kind of time generally, do we? I mean the time that it takes for a five mile might just be the kind of time that it takes to drive to the club in the first place. With hour long commutes that IS an issue, wouldn't you agree?

But the question of where does the term Health Nut come from hasn't really been answered. Maybe that's because its really just not necessary to do so. All that you should really care about is that it go the way of GIRL-- as that term term did during Women'sLib. That way you could feel psychologically OK for doing what is good for you.

That would be an improvement, wouldn't it? Or do you live in a neighborhood filled with marathoners?
