The Supposed Futility of Hard Work
Everyone knows that becoming as peerless as a Jack Lalanne takes hours of hard work. But not everyone knows that this will really pay off for them.
There is a widespread distrust of what I have called GOFHW (good old fashioned hard work) in my book Think and Grow Fit. That probably comes from trying and trying, never to see any headway at all. That is, the mirror which never lies seems to always say that nothing has happened.
The same goes for people you see everyday at the club. They never seem to change. Sometimes they even become a little less shapely for their efforts, possibly due to discouragemenet and one too may TGIF pigouts as a reward for their efforts.
That is why we grasp onto the gene theory when we see folks who appear to have made it. They must have been born that way or they must have benefited from GOFHW because of their body chemistry.
I do not believe any of this. I have seen people transform after a long time (2 years) of consistent going through the motions. That's why my answer to those who feel like giving up is simply hang in there, but do so for another 6 mobnths--not another 6 minutes.
Clearly I don't know if my exemplary people had great genes. But I know that you don't know if they did either!! That's the argument. Looking at my parents, I doubt that they passed on anything genetically wondrous. And I do things today that I never could have done iin high school. Sorry, if that's obnoxious, but I believe in what I'm saying. My GOFHW has paid off. So CAN yours.
